How to make individual tax payments online
INDIVIDUAL TAXPAYERS
Federal tax payments for balances due can be made online at IRS Direct Pay.
You will need your Social Security number, bank routing number, and bank account number.
On the next screen, click the box for “Make a Payment.”
For IRS Balance Due payments, select:
Reason for Payment: “Balance Due”
Apply Payment To: “Income Tax – Form 1040”
Tax Period: Select the applicable tax year.
For IRS Extension payments, select:
Reason for Payment: “Extension”
Apply Payment To: “4868 (for 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ)”
Tax Period: Select the applicable tax year.
For IRS Estimated Tax payments, select:
Reason for Payment: “Estimated Tax”
Apply Payment To: “1040-ES”
Tax Period: Select the applicable tax year.
On the next screen, enter the year of your most recently filed tax return as the Tax Year for Verification.
For Filing Status, choose MFJ or MFS if married, or Single or HOH if unmarried.
Enter your personal information (name, address, date of birth, etc.). For married taxpayers, use the SSN and name of the primary taxpayer (the person listed first on the tax return).
Click Continue, and on the next screen, enter your desired bank account information.
Print the confirmation screen and keep it for your records. You can also upload a copy to the portal.
California Tax Payments
California tax payments for balances due can be made online at FTB Pay.
Select "Use Web Pay Personal."
Enter the primary taxpayer’s Social Security number, last name, and the Captcha code.
Enter your name and address information.
Select the Payment Type. Common types include:
Tax Return Payments (540)
Estimated Tax Payments (540-ES)
Extension Payments (Form 3519)
Amended Tax Return Payments
Select the Applicable Tax Year.
Select the Payment Amount and Payment Date. For estimates, you can schedule multiple payments with different dates.
If married, select “Yes” for joint payment and enter your spouse's information.
Enter your Bank Account Information.
Submit the payment and print/save the confirmation.
Note: The FTB does not accept payments by credit card without charging a fee.
