Position Summary

The Seasonal Tax Preparer is responsible for assisting clients in preparing and filing accurate tax returns during the tax season. This role requires analyzing financial records, applying knowledge of tax regulations, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws. Seasonal Tax Preparers provide excellent customer service while working in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Tax Preparation

  • Prepare and file individual, business, and/or other tax returns based on client needs.

  • Review financial documents, such as income statements, receipts, and other records, to ensure accurate tax calculations.

  • Identify applicable deductions, credits, and liabilities to optimize client tax returns.

2. Client Interaction

  • Explain tax laws, filing requirements, and the preparation process in simple terms.

  • Address client inquiries, resolve concerns, and provide clear communication throughout the process.

3. Compliance and Accuracy

  • Ensure all returns comply with current federal, state, and local tax laws.

  • Verify and cross-check data to minimize errors in tax filings.

  • Stay updated on changes to tax regulations that may affect clients.

4. Documentation and Filing

  • Maintain accurate records of all prepared returns and client interactions.

  • Create supporting workpaper documentation for all projects.

  • Ensure secure handling of sensitive client information, adhering to confidentiality standards.

5. Support for the Office

  • Assist with basic administrative tasks, such as managing tax documentation and assemble paper returns if required (client copies or efile rejects).

  • Collaborate with other staff to ensure timely completion of all client returns during peak periods.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting; additional coursework in tax preparation (preferred).

  • Experience preparing individual or business tax returns (preferred but not required).

  • Certification from an accredited tax preparation program (preferred).

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong understanding of federal and state tax laws.

  • Proficiency in tax preparation software (CCH Axcess, CCH Scan & AutoFlow), Truss and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with diverse clients.

  • Ability to work effectively managing multiple projects at once and maintaining the project management software throughout the project life cycle.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Enrolled Agent (EA) designation (a plus).

Work Environment

  • Seasonal position with increased hours during tax season (typically January to April).

  • Primarily office-based, with the possibility of remote work depending on the candidates performance.

  • Fast-paced environment requiring focus and efficiency during peak periods.

Compensation

  • Hourly wage or salary based on experience and certifications.

  • Potential for performance-based incentives or bonuses during tax season.
